Williams, Anna (Wessels) (1863-1954)

US physician and bacteriologist. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, she taught at the New York Infirmary (1891-95, 1902-05) and was assistant director of the New York City Research Laboratories (1905-34) as well as a prolific writer. Best known for research on infectious diseases and discovery of an effective diphtheria immunization, she also fought to advance the cause of women doctors.
