Williams, Serena Jameka (1981– )

US tennis player. She made her name with her surprise win over Martina Hingis in the final of the US Open in 1999, becoming the third African American to win a Grand Slam tournament. In winning the 2001 Australian Open doubles title with her sister Venus Williams, they became only the fourth pair to win the women's doubles title at all four Grand Slam tournaments. She has won each of the four major championships and her Australian Open victory in 2007 was her eighth Grand Slam singles title.

On winning the 2003 Australian Open, beating her sister Venus in the final, Williams held all four Grand Slam titles at the same time.

Her first tournament win came at the Paris Indoors, France, in 1999 on the same day that her sister Venus won in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Both sisters are coached and managed by their father, Richard.
