Williamsburg

Historic town in southeast Virginia, USA; population (1990) 11,500. It is the administrative headquarters of (but is administratively separate from) James City County. It is situated between the James and York rivers, 74 km/46 mi southeast of Richmond, and 10 km/6 mi northeast of Jamestown. Founded in 1632, it served as the capital of the colony of Virginia from 1699–1779. Much of it has been restored to its 18th-century appearance. The town is a major tourist attraction. The College of William and Mary (1693) is one of the oldest in the USA.
