Williamsport

Industrial town and administrative headquarters of Lycoming County, north-central Pennsylvania, USA; population (2000) 30,700. It is situated on the Susquehanna River and Lycoming Creek, in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, 121 km/75 mi north-northwest of Harrisburg. Industries include electronics, plastics, metals, lumber, textiles, and aircraft parts. It was founded 1795 and is the birthplace of Little League baseball (1939). Lycoming College (1812) and Williamsport Area Community College (1920) are both in the town.
