Willis, Bailey

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Willis, Bailey (1857–1949)

US geologist. His conclusion that earthquakes cannot be predicted led to his proposals for better building codes in earthquake-intensive areas. Born in Idlewild-on-Hudson, New York, he served the US Geological Survey (1884–1916), taking leaves to explore China in 1902 and Argentina 1911–15. He joined Stanford University in 1915, where his lectures and research on seismology earned him the sobriquets ‘the earthquake professor’ and ‘Earthquake Willie’. After his retirement in 1922 he travelled to seismic centres of the world.
