Williston

Town and administrative headquarters of Williams County, northwest North Dakota; population (1990) 13,100. It is situated on the Missouri River, 29 km/18 mi east of the Montana state border, and 169 km/105 mi west of Minot. It is a trade and distribution hub for local grain, dairy products, coal, and oil.

Founded in 1880 as a port for steamers servicing the western Montana goldfields, it subsequently became a railway centre after 1887. Fort Buford State Historic Site is 3 km/2 mi to the west.
