Willmar

Town and administrative headquarters of Kandiyohi County, east-central Minnesota; population (1990) 17,500. It is situated on the Foot and Willmar lakes, 80 km/50 mi southwest of St Cloud. It is a trading and processing centre for the region's poultry (especially turkey), cattle, dairy products, and grain. Industries include foundries, machine shops, printing, and the manufacture of farm machinery, children's furniture, and clothing. Tourism is also significant, with visitors drawn to the local lakes. The town is home to Willmar Community College (1961) and Willmar Technical College.

An 1856 settlement here was abandoned during the 1862 Sioux uprising. Willmar was reestablished in 1869 as a railhead construction camp, eventually becoming a rail administrative centre and shipping point for local grain and livestock.
