Wilson, Pete

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Wilson, Pete (1933– )

US Republican politician, governor of California from 1991. He was senator from California 1983–91, and mayor of San Diego, California, 1971–83.

Wilson was born in Lake Forest, Illinois. He pioneered controlled urban growth in San Diego, encouraging public transport, discouraging the use of private cars, and concentrating development in rural areas. As governor of California (he had defeated Dianne Feinstein in the election), he increased taxes in order to reduce the large budget deficit. He was re-elected in 1994, but unexpectedly failed to challenge for the Republican Party's 1996 presidential nomination.
