Wilson, William Julius

Wilson, William Julius (1935- )

US sociologist. He studied the ghetto poor and the cycle of poverty in The USA and developed city programs in Chicago to help urban black Americans. Born in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, he earned his PhD at Washington State University and joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1971. His works include Power, Racism and Privilege (1973), Through Different Eyes (1973), and The Truly Disadvantaged (1987). He was awarded the 1998 National Medal of Science.
