Wilson, Brian (1942– )

US pop musician and producer, founder member of the Beach Boys.

He grew up in Los Angeles, and, with his two brothers Carl and Dennis, formed a band – Carl and the Passions – in 1961. As the Beach Boys they had their first hit with ‘Surfin' USA’ in 1963. Other hits included ‘I Get Around’ (1964), ‘California Girls’ (1965), and ‘Good Vibrations’ (1966).

Pet Sounds was released to critical acclaim in 1966. Wilson spent most of the next 20 years in retirement but returned with a solo album, Brian Wilson, in 1988. He followed with Imagination (1998); Gettin' In Over My Head (2004), featuring collaborations with Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Eric Clapton; and Smile (2004).
