Winchelsea

Town in East Sussex, southeast England, about 3 km/2 mi from Rye; population (2001) 2,550. The town was formerly one of the Cinque Ports. During the 16th century the inlet to the sea became silted up, and Winchelsea is now more than 1 km/0.6 mi from the sea.

New Winchelsea was laid out in about 1290 by Edward I to replace Old Winchelsea, which was submerged by the sea in 1287. The plans were never the completed because harbour silted up, and the church of St Thomas was also never finished, although the 14th-century chancel can still be seen.

? Mentioned in ? References in classic literature

When, two days later, he appeared before the King at Winchelsea and reported the outcome of his mission Henry raged and stormed, swearing by all the saints in the calendar that Norman of Torn should hang for his effrontery before the snow flew again.
I had a turn with them upon the sea when they came over to Winchelsea and the good queen with her ladies sat upon the cliffs looking down at us, as if it had been joust or tourney.
