Winchester, Battle of

In English history, defeat 14 September 1141 of Matilda's forces, which were besieging the episcopal residence of Wolvesey Castle, by a royalist relief force. Her forces were themselves besieged, and were defeated as they tried to break out. Robert, Earl of Gloucester was captured, forcing Matilda to release King Stephen, who had been held since the battle of Lincoln in exchange for him.
