Windischgrätz, Alfred, Prince von

    0.02 sec.

Windischgrätz, Alfred, Prince von (1787–1862)

Austrian general who overthrew the liberal regime that came to power in Austria after the Revolutions of 1848 and restored the Habsburg monarchy.

Windischgrätz was born in Brussels, and was put in command of Austrian forces in Bohemia in the 1840s. Acting on his own initiative, he suppressed the liberal uprising in Prague in 1848. This provided the momentum for the old order to regain power throughout Austria-Hungary, and Windischgrätz's armies had soon subdued the citizens of Vienna and marched on Hungary. He was replaced after defeat by the Hungarians at the battle of Gödöllö.
