Windmill Hill

Neolithic (New Stone Age) defensive earthwork or causewayed camp, with interrupted ditches, 2.5 km/1.5 mi northwest of Avebury, Wiltshire, England. The Windmill Hill culture is the earliest of the English Neolithic with a distinctive type of pottery found also in Switzerland and France.

A farming community, the people of Windmill Hill bred cattle, cultivated wheat in small plots, and excavated flint for tools and weapons, which they also traded. Studies of the pottery suggest three separate migrations in their cultural make-up. Large amounts of apparently nonlocal pottery has been found, together with polished axes from stone sources elsewhere and finely made tools. This suggests that Windmill Hill may have been a marketplace or exchange site for a large area.

Local pottery became more decorative in later phases of the site and pottery of the Beaker people appeared, suggesting a ritual focus for the site.
