Window Rock

Town in Apache County, northeast Arizona; population (1990) 3,300. It is situated on the New Mexico state border, 32 km/20 mi northwest of Gallup. It is the capital of the huge Navajo Indian Reservation. Established in 1936 as the central agency headquarters for the reservation, it was named after a huge opening in the surrounding sandstone cliffs. The Navajo Council House and Navajo Tribal Museum are in the town, and the Navajo Nation Fair, one of the largest American Indian fairs, is held here annually.
