window tax

Tax on windows imposed in England 1696, replacing hearth tax. Scotland was exempt under terms of the Union 1707. Houses with fewer than seven (later eight) windows were exempted 1792, but this led to windows being blocked up and new houses being built with few windows. It was abolished 1851.
