Winfield

Town and administrative headquarters of Cowley County, southeast Kansas; population (1990) 11,900. It is situated on the Walnut River, 56 km/35 mi south-southeast of Wichita, in an agricultural and oil and gas producing area. Local agricultural produce includes flour, feed, and dairy goods. The town also has foundries and industries manufacturing oilfield equipment, steel goods, gas burners, and barrels. Winfield is home to Southwestern College (1885) and Saint John's College (1893).
