Winnemucca

Town and administrative headquarters of Humboldt County, north-central Nevada; population (1990) 6,100. It is situated on the Humboldt River, 240 km/150 mi northeast of Reno. The town is a trade centre that ships livestock, has a bottling plant, and smelts gold, silver, copper, and tungsten mined in the vicinity.

Winnemucca was founded in 1859 as a fur trappers' trading post. The Buckaroo Hall of Fame celebrates the region's cowboy culture, and there are several annual rodeos. The area's significant Basque population also has an annual festival.

It is known that he was found by a family of Piute Indians, who kept the little wretch with them for a time and then sold him--actually sold him for money to a woman on one of the east-bound trains, at a station a long way from Winnemucca.
