Winnetka

Town in Cook County, northeast Illinois; population (1990) 12,200. It is situated on Lake Michigan, 29 km/18 mi north of Chicago. An affluent bedroom community, it was originally a stop on the pre-European Green Bay Trail, and was settled by Americans in the 1830s. It was the home of the Winnetka Plan, an experimental method of public school teaching, developed in the 1920s.
