Winnsboro

Winnsboro

Town and administrative headquarters of Fairfield County, north-central South Carolina; population (1990) 3,500. It is located 40 km/25 mi north of Columbia. The town has textile and granite works. Winnsboro also process and distribute local corn and livestock.

Settled in the mid 18th century, it was briefly occupied in 1780 by Cornwallis during the American Revolution. During the Civil War, it was looted and partially burned by Union troops in 1865, but many older structures remain.
