Winona

Town and administrative headquarters Winona County, southeast Minnesota; population (1990) 25,400. It is situated on the Mississippi River and Lake Winona, across from Centerville, Wisconsin, and 68 km/42 mi east of Rochester. It produces cattle feed, flour, dairy products, and beverages; building stone is made from limestone quarried nearby. Other facilities include rail repair shops and factories producing pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is home to Winona State University (1858), the College of St Theresa (1907), and St Mary's College (1912).

Winona was founded in 1851 as a shipping centre for wheat, and became a prosperous logging and sawmilling town. After 1900 manufacturing came to dominate the economy. The headquarters of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge are in the town.

Town and administrative headquarters of Montgomery County, north-central Mississippi; population (1990) 5,700. It is located 40 km/25 mi east of Greenwood. It is a processing centre in an area that raises cotton, dairy and beef cattle, and poultry; auto parts are also manufactured.
