Winooski

Town in Chittenden County, northwest Vermont; population (1990) 6,600. It is situated on the Winooski River, to the north of Burlington. The community developed after a woollen mill was established on the falls in 1835, and became a textiles centre. Furniture, window screens, and wood and metal products also have been significant to the local economy. It is home to St Michael's College (1904). Winooski includes a large French-Canadian population.
