Winstanley, Gerrard (c. 1609–c. 1660)

English radical. In outspoken pamphlets like The Law of Freedom in a Platform (1652), he attacked kings, landlords, merchants, and priests, and outlined an ideal communist society.

Believing that land should be made available to the very poor, he led the Diggers in their attempt to found agricultural communes in Surrey in 1649.
