Winston County

County in northwest Alabama; area 1,588 sq km/613 sq mi; population (1990) 22,100. Its administrative headquarters is Double Springs, located in the Bankhead National Forest. This small-farming area in the Red Hills rejected Secession in 1861. Citizens of Haleyville and other towns joined a force to represent ‘Free Winston’ or the proposed state of Nickajack, and many eventually fought with the Union.
