Wintel

In computing, term for personal computers based on Microsoft Windows software and Intel processors. The advantage of the term is that it avoids reference to IBM compatibility, since IBM has not set standards in the PC industry since 1987.

Wintel PC standards are decided at frequent WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering) conferences, mainly under the direction of Microsoft, Intel, Hewlwtt-Packard (the largest PC manufacturer), and Phoenix (a supplier of BIOS chips).
