Winter Park

Town in Grand County, north-central Colorado; population (1990) 500. It is situated in the Arapahoe National Forest, at an altitude of 2,745 m/9,000 ft, 64 km/40 mi northwest of Denver. Berthoud Pass is to the south, and the Continental Divide to the east. Development of the town dates from 1927, when the 11 km/7 mi-long Moffatt Tunnel across the Divide linked Denver with the area. A rope tow at Berthoud Pass (1937) and the construction of the Winter Park Ski Area (1940) ultimately transformed the town into one of Colorado's major skiing centres and a hub for many other winter sports.

Winter Park

Town in Orange County, east-central Florida; population (1990) 22,200. It is situated 8 km/5 mi northeast of Orlando. Founded in the 1850s and formally laid out in the 1880s, it has a chain of small lakes within its town limits, connected by navigable canals. Noted for its parks and gardens, the town lies in a citrus growing area (the Temple orange was developed here), and is a shipping centre for the fruits. Rollins College (1885) is the site of many cultural institutions; it has held a major Bach festival since the 1930s.
