Wirral, the

Narrow peninsula between the Dee and Mersey estuaries, northwest England; population (2001) 312,300. It forms part of the Merseyside conurbation and is mainly a residential area but with some industrial development, notably at Birkenhead, Port Sunlight, and Ellesmere Port.
