Wisconsin Rapids

Town and administrative headquarters of Wood County, central Wisconsin; population (1990) 18,300. It is situated on the Wisconsin River, 64 km/40 mi southwest of Wausau. It is the trade and distribution centre of a cranberry producing area. Local industries include paper milling and dairy processing. Factories also produce paint, plastics, and kitchen appliances. The first wood pulp and paper mills were built here in 1837.
