Wise, Robert Earl

Wise, Robert Earl (1914–2005)

US film director. He began as a film editor, contributing to such blockbusters as Citizen Kane (1941), and made his directorial debut with a horror film, Curse of the Cat People (1944). He progressed to such large-scale projects as The Sound of Music (1965) and Star (1968).

Other films include The Body Snatcher (1945), Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), and the urban musical Rooftops (1989). In 2000 he directed the television film A Storm in Summer.

He was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 1985–88.
