Wishart, Peter (1921-1984)

English composer. He studied with Nadia Boulanger and at Birmingham University; lecturer there 1950-59. King's College, London, 1972-77, professor at Reading University 1977-84. His music was influenced by Stravinsky and Orff.

Opera

Two in the Bush (1956), The Captive (1960), The Clandestine Marriage (1971) and Clytemnestra (1973).

Ballet

Beowulf and Persephone (1957).

Orchestral

two symphonies (1953, 1973), two violin concertos (1951, 1968), concerto for orchestra (1957).

Choral

Te Deum (1952) and much other choral music.

Chamber

string quartet (1954); organ sonata.
