Wismar

German Baltic Sea port in the Land (administrative region) of Mecklenburg–West Pomerania; population (2005 est) 45,400. The town's main employer is a large shipyard. Wismar became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1266, and was later ruled by Sweden, Denmark, and then Mecklenburg-Schwerin. It was heavily bombed during World War II, and was extensively rebuilt.

The Swedish crown finally waived all claims to Wismar in 1903. The town has a number of Gothic churches, notably St Nicholas (14th–15th centuries), and several old merchants' houses with stepped gables.
