Wissler, Clark(son Davis) (1870-1947)

US anthropologist. He wrote a landmark text, The American Indian (1917), popularized anthropology as an academic discipline, and formulated the concept of North American ‘culture areas’ and the ‘age-area’ theory of the diffusion of culture. Born in Wayne County, Indiana, he spent his career at the American Museum of Natural History (1902-47).
