Witney

Market town in Oxfordshire, England, on the River Windrush, 16 km/10 mi from Oxford; population (2001) 22,800. Blankets, gloves, and other woollen goods are manufactured here. Witney has a number of old buildings.

There is a 13th-century cruciform church (restored 1867), the grammar school (1663), the Blue Coat School (1723), and the Blanket Hall (about 1720).

The small roofed open-air shelter known as the Butter Cross in the market place, near to the Town Hall, was erected in 1683, replacing the old Butter Cross which formerly stood on this site.
