Witte, Emmanuel de

    0.06 sec.

Witte, Emmanuel de (1617–1692)

Dutch painter. He specialized in views of church interiors. His large, airy compositions reach a high point of architectural painting, the creamy interiors often relieved by dark figure groups and genre scenes.

Witte studied in Delft and worked in various cities but mainly in Amsterdam – many of his interiors are of, or based on, the Oude Kerk and the Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam. Apart from this speciality, he experimented in outdoor scenes of popular life, an example of which is Fish Market (Boymans–van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam).
