Witte, Erich (1911- )

German tenor. After his 1932 debut at Bremen he sang in Wiesbaden and Breslau, and between 1938 and 1939 he was heard in New York at the Metropolitan Opera House, as Froh and Mime. He sang David at Bayreuth during the war, and during the 1950s was admired there and at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, as Loge. In 1957 he produced Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/The Mastersingers of Nuremberg at the Royal Opera House, and sang Walther. He appeared at the Berlin Staatsoper until 1960 and was producer there from 1964. Other roles included Otello, Florestan, and Peter Grimes.
