Wittgenstein, Paul (1887-1961)

Austrian pianist. He was a brother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Despite losing his right arm in World War I he continued a career as a pianist, cultivating a virtuoso left-arm technique. He commissioned Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand (1929-30), Prokofiev's Concerto No 4 in B Flat (1931), and concert works from Richard Strauss, Benjamin Britten, and others.
