Witzleben, Erwin von (1881–1944)

German field marshal in World War II. He commanded the 1st German Army in France 1940 and became commander-in-chief in the West May 1941 but retired for health reasons 1942. He had long been involved with a circle of officers opposed to Hitler and was drawn into the July Plot 1944, being nominated as the future commander-in-chief after Hitler had been killed. When the plot failed he was arrested and hanged August 1944.
