Wixell, Ingvar (1931– )

Swedish baritone. He sang Papageno in 1955 at the Royal Opera, Stockholm, and was heard as Ruggiero in Alcina when the company visited the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London (1960). In 1962 he appeared at Glyndebourne, as Guglielmo. At the 1966 Salzburg Festival he sang Mozart's Count, and the following year he joined the Deutsche Oper, Berlin. He was a regular visitor to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden from 1970, where he sang Boccanegra, Scarpia, Mandryka, and Mozart's Count. He made his US debut in 1967 at Chicago, as Belcore; his first New York performance took place in January 1973 at the Metropolitan Opera House, as Rigoletto. From 1971 he sang at Bayreuth, and in 1991 he was Scarpia at Earl's Court, London. Other roles included Pizarro and Don Giovanni.
