Wizard of Oz, The1939 US film musical based on a novel by Frank L Baum starring US actor Judy Garland as Dorothy, and directed by Victor Fleming. The film tells the story of Dorothy, who is swept away from her Kansas home by a tornado, and lands in Oz, where she meets the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow, who go off in search of the Wizard of Oz. Much loved for its classic songs, including ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’, the film was one of the first to be put on the US National Film Registry list (a list that aims to preserve landmark US films).
