Wolstenholme, William

Wolstenholme, William (1865–1931)

English organist and composer. He was precociously gifted, although blind. He was trained in music at the College for the Blind at Worcester, where Elgar taught him the violin. He cultivated the organ and piano especially. He became church organist at Blackburn in 1887 and at various churches in London from 1902. In 1908 he toured the USA as a recitalist.

church music; orchestra and military band works; chamber music; c. 100 works for organ, including sonatas, fantasy, prelude and fugue; piano pieces.
