Wood Green

Area in the northern borough of Haringey in London, England. Prior to the reorganization of local government in Greater London in the 1960s, it was an independent borough, and before the area's urbanization (principally in the latter half of the 19th century), it had been part of Tottenham. As it was covered by woodland called Tottenham Wood, it came to be known as Tottenham Wood Green.

Until the 1990s, Wood Green was known mainly as a neighbourhood centred on an unexceptional north London high street dominated by a huge shopping centre. Since then, however, it has been considered one of London's most up-and-coming town centres, mainly because of its good transport connections to the West End and the City, and affordable housing. During the late 1990s, Wood Green benefited from considerable regeneration funds and private investment, and consequently became a livelier neighbourhood. St Michael's Church (consecrated 1844) is one of the most architecturally important buildings of the area.
