Wood River

Town in Madison County, southwest Illinois; population (1990) 11,500. It is situated on the Mississippi River at the Missouri state border, 26 km/16 mi northeast of St Louis, and to the south of East Alton. Part of the Wood River–Alton industrial complex, it was founded in 1907, when Standard Oil built a refinery here. Local manufactures include tank cars and pipeline terminals, as well as stone, clay, and glass products.
