Manufactures include cement blocks, clothing, and electrical parts. A cultural hub, Woodbury has a symphony orchestra and various arts groups.

The Quaker Wood family settled it in the 1680s. In spite of Quaker attempts to keep it neutral, it became an important centre during the American Revolution, serving as headquarters for both the British (1777) and Americans (1779).
