Woodville

Town and administrative headquarters of Wilkinson County, southwest Mississippi; population (1990) 1,400. It is located 80 km/50 mi west-southwest of McComb, and 11 km/7 mi north of the Louisiana state line. Settled in the 18th century, it has a number of antebellum homes and churches. Composer William Grant Still (1895) and jazz giant Lester Young (1909) were both born here. Rosemont Plantation (1810), the boyhood home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, is 2 km/1 mi to the east.
