Woodward

Town and administrative headquarters of Woodward County, west Oklahoma; population (1990) 12,300. It is located 137 km/85 mi west of Enid and to the east of the Oklahoma Panhandle. It was settled in 1893 when the Cherokee Strip was opened for homesteading. On a cattle trail from Texas to Kansas, it became a trade and banking centre. The town now markets and processes livestock, grain, and sorghums, and engages in light industry. One of the largest Federal agricultural experiment stations is here.
