Woodward, Arthur Smith (1864–1944)

English geologist who published important research into the fossils of fish, amphibia, birds, mammals, and reptiles. He was the author of an influential textbook, Vertebrate Palaeontology (1898).

Woodward was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire. He was educated at Owens College, Manchester, and held the post of keeper of the geological department of the British Museum 1901–24.
