Woolman, John (1720–1772)
American Quaker, born in Ancocas (now Rancocas), New Jersey. He was one of the first antislavery agitators and left an important Journal. He supported those who refused to pay a tax levied by Pennsylvania, to conduct the French and Indian War, on the grounds that it was inconsistent with pacifist principles.
