Woonsocket

Industrial city in Providence County, north Rhode Island, USA; population (2000) 43,200. It is situated on the Blackstone River and Massachusetts state border, 21 km/13 mi north-northwest of Providence. Industries include rubber, chemicals, and woollen goods. Woonsocket had a 1666 sawmill, a 1720 foundry, and an 1810 cotton mill, and in 1840 began woollen manufacturing. It is still primarily a woollen and worsted centre. The city has a large French-Canadian population.
