Wordie, James Mann

Wordie, James Mann (1889–1962)

British scientist and explorer. He was geologist and chief of scientific staff to Shackleton's Antarctic expedition of 1914–16, and led expeditions to Spitsbergen, Greenland, Jan Mayen Island, and Baffin Island. He was chairman of the British Committee for the International Geophysical Year 1957–58, and of the Scott Polar Research Institute.

He was born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow and Cambridge universities. In 1957 he was knighted.
