Wordsworth, William B

Wordsworth, William B(rocklesby) (1908–1988)

English composer. He did not begin to study music seriously until he was 20, and in 1935 became a pupil of Donald Tovey. During World War II he took to farming, but after that devoted himself entirely to composition. He was a direct descendant of the poet's brother.

Orchestra and chorus

The Houseless Dead (D H Lawrence) for baritone chorus and orchestra, Hymn of Dedication (Chesterton) for chorus and orchestra.

Orchestral

eight symphonies (1944–86), theme and variations, Three Pastoral Sketches for orchestra, Sinfonia and Canzone and Ballade for strings; piano concerto, cello concerto.

Chamber

six string quartets (1941–64); string trio; two sonatas for violin and piano, two sonatas for cello and piano; sonata and suite for piano.

Other

three hymn-tune preludes for organ; Four Sacred Sonnets (Donne, 1944) and other songs; rounds for several voices.
